How buying a gun in Lawton works
Pick an FFL dealer near you that accepts shipped transfers and name it at checkout. We confirm their license and ship the firearm to them. Ammunition, optics and parts ship straight to your door where Oklahoma law allows.
Oklahoma has no state purchase permit or state waiting period for dealer sales of rifles or handguns. Federal law sets the dealer minimum age at 18 for long guns and 21 for handguns, and each sale runs through Form 4473 and a background check. OSBI notes the Self-Defense Act handgun license is approved as a NICS alternate permit. Rifles ship to the federally licensed (FFL) dealer you choose, where you complete ATF Form 4473 and the background check. Under federal rules, a holder of an ATF 03 Curio & Relic license may receive C&R-eligible rifles directly at the licensed premises; confirm current state and local rules before ordering.

Carrying a gun in Comanche County
Since November 1, 2019, Oklahomans 21 and older, or 18 and older if serving in or honorably discharged from the military, who may legally own a firearm can carry without a license or training. The optional handgun license under the Self-Defense Act is issued by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation. OSBI lists the fee at $100 for a five-year license and $200 for a ten-year license, and says processing can take 60 to 90 days. Holders gain reciprocity in other states.
Hunting near Lawton
ODWC lists the 2026 youth deer gun season Oct. 16 to 18, regular deer gun season Nov. 21 to Dec. 6, and holiday antlerless season Dec. 18 to 31; antlerless days vary by zone, so check the zone map for Comanche County. For deer gun season, ODWC requires centerfire rifles firing at least a 55-grain soft-nosed or hollow-point bullet. That means .30-06, 8mm Mauser, 7.62x54R and .303 British rifles qualify with soft-point or hollow-point hunting loads, not full metal jacket surplus ball.
The Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge next to Lawton offers deer and elk hunting only through controlled hunts drawn on the ODWC website. Outside the refuge, most hunting is on private land, with statewide season dates set by ODWC.
The granite peaks of the Wichita Mountains rise just northwest of town, and the refuge's controlled elk and deer hunts draw thousands of applicants. Field artillery history runs deep here, from the frontier post to today's schools.
