How buying a gun in Hattiesburg works
Pick an FFL dealer near you that accepts shipped transfers and name it at checkout. We confirm their license and ship the firearm to them. Ammunition, optics and parts ship straight to your door where Mississippi law allows.
Mississippi does not require a state permit to buy a rifle or handgun. At a licensed dealer you complete Form 4473 with a valid photo ID and the dealer runs the federal background check. Federal law sets the dealer-sale minimum at 18 for rifles and 21 for handguns. Rifles we sell ship to the FFL dealer you choose, where you complete Form 4473 and the background check. Under federal rules, a holder of an ATF 03 Curio and Relic license may receive C&R-eligible rifles directly at the licensed premises; we are not aware of a state rule that limits this, but confirm with your dealer or the ATF.

Carrying a gun in Forrest County
Since 2016, Mississippi law has not required a license for a pistol carried in a holster or sheath, or in a purse, bag or fully enclosed case, by someone who may lawfully possess it and is not in a prohibited place. The Department of Public Safety issues firearm permits, generally to residents 21 and older, or 18 to 20 with qualifying military service. Applicants apply in person in Jackson or at a Highway Patrol district office, where they are fingerprinted and photographed. An optional enhanced endorsement requires an eight-hour course. Confirm current fees with DPS.
Hunting near Hattiesburg
MDWFP's 2026-27 season sheet for the Southeast Unit lists gun with dogs from November 21 to December 1, primitive weapon from December 2 to 15, gun without dogs from December 16 to 23, and gun with dogs again from December 24 to January 20. Either-sex hunting applies on private land and legal bucks only on open public land. The guide sets no caliber or magazine limits for gun season, so .30-06, 8mm Mauser, 7.62x54R and .303 British rifles are allowed. Use expanding hunting loads rather than surplus FMJ for clean kills, and check National Forest and WMA rules.
Hattiesburg lies south of U.S. 84 and east of MS 35, inside the Southeast Deer Management Unit. The De Soto National Forest, which starts just south of town, is one of the largest public hunting areas in the state.
Longleaf pine country in the De Soto National Forest draws deer, turkey and hog hunters, and the Forest Service's Black Creek Shooting Range near Brooklyn offers free target shooting. Deer camp with dogs is still a south Mississippi tradition.
