How buying a gun in Anniston works

Pick an FFL dealer near you that accepts shipped transfers and name it at checkout. We confirm their license and ship the firearm to them. Ammunition, optics and parts ship straight to your door where Alabama law allows.

Alabama does not ask rifle buyers for a state purchase permit; a licensed dealer runs the federal background check and you complete Form 4473 with a valid photo ID. Federal law sets the dealer-sale minimum at 18 for rifles and shotguns and 21 for handguns. Rifles we sell ship to the FFL dealer you choose, where you complete Form 4473 and the background check. Under federal rules, a holder of an ATF 03 Curio and Relic license may receive C&R-eligible rifles directly at the licensed premises; we are not aware of a state rule that limits this, but confirm with your dealer or the ATF.

Carrying a gun in Calhoun County

Since January 1, 2023, Alabama has not required a permit to carry a concealed pistol for people who may lawfully possess one. Permits are still issued, mainly for travel to states that honor them. The county sheriff issues one-year and five-year concealed carry permits to Alabama residents, and the fee is set by local law, so ask the Calhoun County Sheriff for the current amount. The Jefferson County Sheriff summarizes permitless carry as applying to people 19 and older, or 18 for military and law enforcement. Alabama recognizes valid out-of-state permits, and private property owners may still bar firearms.

Hunting near Anniston

For 2026-27, Outdoor Alabama lists the gun deer season in Zones A, B and C opening November 21, 2026 and running to February 10, 2027 for stalk hunting, with either-sex and buck-only periods that differ between private land and open public land. Zones D and E open November 7. Legal gun-season arms include rifles and handguns firing centerfire mushrooming (expanding) ammunition, so .30-06, 8mm Mauser, 7.62x54R and .303 British rifles qualify with soft-point or other expanding hunting loads. Military full metal jacket ammunition does not meet that rule. Check the current digest and WMA rules before you go.

Part of Calhoun County north of I-20 and east of AL Hwy 21 falls in deer Zone E, so check the official zone map for the land you hunt. Choccolocco WMA and the Shoal Creek and Talladega districts of the Talladega National Forest offer public hunting close to town.

The Talladega National Forest and Choccolocco WMA put deer and turkey woods within a half hour of downtown. Service-rifle and high-power shooting have deep roots here thanks to the CMP and the area's long Army history.
