How buying a gun in Killeen works
Pick an FFL dealer near you that accepts shipped transfers and name it at checkout. We confirm their license and ship the firearm to them. Ammunition, optics and parts ship straight to your door where Texas law allows.
Texas does not issue a state permit to purchase a rifle or handgun and does not set a state waiting period on dealer sales. Federal law sets the dealer minimum age at 18 for rifles and shotguns and 21 for handguns, and every dealer sale runs through Form 4473 and a background check. Rifles ship to the federally licensed (FFL) dealer you choose, where you complete ATF Form 4473 and the background check. Under federal rules, a holder of an ATF 03 Curio & Relic license may receive C&R-eligible rifles directly at the licensed premises; confirm current state and local rules before ordering.

Carrying a gun in Bell County
Since September 1, 2021, Texans 21 and older who are not barred from having a firearm may carry a handgun without a license, with location limits that still apply. The License to Carry (LTC) remains available and is issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety under Government Code Chapter 411, Subchapter H. DPS says it no longer denies LTC applications solely because an applicant is 18 to 20, following a federal court ruling. Many carriers keep an LTC for reciprocity in other states.
Hunting near Killeen
In Bell County west of I-35, the 2026-27 archery season runs Oct. 3 to Nov. 6, 2026, and the general season runs Nov. 7, 2026 to Jan. 3, 2027, followed by a Special Late season Jan. 4 to 17, 2027 (TPWD county listing). TPWD allows any legal firearm for deer except rimfire ammunition. Centerfire surplus calibers such as .30-06, 8mm Mauser, 7.62x54R and .303 British are not excluded, but TPWD lists no bullet rule, so use hunting-grade expanding loads rather than surplus ball. Check the Outdoor Annual before you hunt.
Bell County sits in TPWD's North Zone, and Killeen falls on the west-of-I-35 side, which has its own bag limit and a Special Late season. Fort Hood runs a permit-based hunting program through its iSportsman system, and feral hogs may be hunted there year-round under installation rules.
Most Central Texas deer and hog hunting happens on private land and leases, with Fort Hood's iSportsman program as the main permit-based option near town. The post's long cavalry and armor history gives the area a strong military identity.
