How buying a gun in Rapid City works
Pick an FFL dealer near you that accepts shipped transfers and name it at checkout. We confirm their license and ship the firearm to them. Ammunition, optics and parts ship straight to your door where South Dakota law allows.
South Dakota does not require a state permit to purchase a rifle or handgun, and the state firearm handbook lists no state waiting period. A licensed dealer completes Form 4473 and runs the federal background check, and federal law sets the dealer age at 18 for long guns and 21 for handguns. Firearms bought online ship to the FFL dealer you choose, where you pick them up. A holder of an ATF 03 Curio and Relic license may receive eligible C&R rifles directly under federal rules; we know of no South Dakota restriction, but confirm current rules before ordering.

Carrying a gun in Pennington County
South Dakota law says residents and nonresidents who may lawfully possess a pistol do not need a permit to carry it concealed in the state. Optional permits remain available and help when traveling. The sheriff of the county where you live issues the regular permit, valid for five years, to applicants 18 or older who pass a background check. Enhanced and gold card permits add fingerprinting and other requirements; the enhanced permit is for those 21 and older, with a restricted version for ages 18 to 20. Prohibited places still apply, so check the state firearm handbook before you carry.
Hunting near Rapid City
Game, Fish and Parks lists the 2026 Black Hills deer season as Nov. 1-30 and the main West River firearm deer season as Nov. 14-29, with an antlerless period Dec. 12-20; licenses are drawn by unit. For deer, rifles must use ammunition rated for at least 1,000 foot-pounds of muzzle energy, and only soft-point or expanding bullets are permitted. Full metal jacket surplus ammunition is not legal for deer. With expanding hunting loads, .30-06, 8mm Mauser, 7.62x54R and .303 British generally meet the energy rule. Check the current Hunting and Trapping Handbook before you hunt.
Rapid City is the gateway to the Black Hills National Forest, where the Black Hills deer season runs through November. Prairie units to the east fall under the West River deer season.
Western South Dakota has a strong hunting and shooting culture, and the state opened the Pete Lien & Sons Shooting Sports Complex north of town in November 2025. Deer, elk and turkey hunters use the national forest and nearby prairie public lands.
