How buying a gun in Coeur d'Alene works
Pick an FFL dealer near you that accepts shipped transfers and name it at checkout. We confirm their license and ship the firearm to them. Ammunition, optics and parts ship straight to your door where Idaho law allows.
Idaho does not require a state permit to purchase a rifle or handgun. At a licensed dealer you show a valid government photo ID, fill out Form 4473, and the dealer runs the federal NICS background check through the FBI. Federal law sets the dealer age at 18 for rifles and 21 for handguns. Rifles from this store ship to the licensed dealer you choose for Form 4473 and the background check. Federal rules let an ATF Type 03 Curio and Relic licensee receive C&R-eligible rifles directly at the licensed premises; check that state or local law does not restrict it.

Carrying a gun in Kootenai County
Idaho lets you carry concealed without a license if you are at least 18, a U.S. citizen or current member of the armed forces, and not disqualified under Idaho law from getting a license for any reason other than age. Restrictions still apply in places such as schools, courthouses and some government buildings. County sheriffs issue both the standard License to Carry Concealed Weapons (Idaho Code 18-3302) and the Enhanced License (18-3302K), which requires a qualifying course and helps with reciprocity. Apply in person at the sheriff's office.
Hunting near Coeur d'Alene
Idaho Fish and Game's Hunt Planner lists 2026 any-weapon white-tailed deer seasons in Unit 3 opening Oct. 10, with some running to Dec. 1, and an antlered mule deer and whitetail window Nov. 1 to 14. Tag types and dates differ, so check the current Big Game Seasons and Rules before you go. Any-weapon seasons allow rifles, and Idaho rules bar rimfire rifles for deer and firearms over 16 pounds with attachments. A .30-06, 8mm Mauser, 7.62x54R or .303 British rifle can work for deer; use expanding hunting bullets, not surplus full metal jacket ammunition, and confirm any bullet rules in the current booklet.
Coeur d'Alene falls in Idaho Fish and Game Unit 3, where about half the land is Forest Service ground in the Coeur d'Alene and Kaniksu National Forests. Unit 4, up the Coeur d'Alene River toward Kellogg and Wallace, is mostly national forest as well.
Timbered ridges hold whitetails, elk and black bear within a short drive of the lake. Fish and Game's Farragut Public Shooting Range near Athol gives rifle, pistol and shotgun shooters a public place to practice before the season.
