Mauser's modern bolt-action line aims at hunters who want a rifle that is light, tough, and accurate without paying for extras. The M18 is a new rifle chambered in .243 Winchester, with a 22-inch barrel, a synthetic stock, a threaded muzzle, and a five-round magazine.

The .243 is a good cartridge for deer, antelope, and varmints. It kicks lightly, which helps new shooters, and it is accurate in the hands of experienced ones. A rifle in this caliber is also a fine choice for young hunters who are stepping up from a .22.

The M18 is current production, and it brings a modern design to the Mauser name. The seller notes the Savannah finish. A threaded muzzle gives you room to fit a brake or other device, though check local rules first. Mount a scope with decent rings and the rifle is ready for the field.

Buyers who like a plain rifle that works will find a lot to like. Spend time at the range to learn the trigger and break in the barrel. Try a few different loads to see which one shoots best. When it arrives, inspect the stock and check the bolt movement. The rifle ships to your local FFL dealer, where the background check is completed.
