A compact barrel, a proprietary muzzle brake, and a heavy receiver describe the SOCOM 16. Springfield Armory chambers it in .308 Winchester and 7.62mm NATO, with a 16 inch barrel, a 10 round magazine, a black finish, and a listed weight of 11 pounds.

The maker explains that the barrel is specially engineered and mated to the gas system, and that the muzzle brake reduces felt recoil and keeps muzzle rise flat for quicker follow-up shots. The shorter length makes the rifle handier than a standard M1A.

Expect a loud report from the brake, especially near other shooters. This rifle suits those who want the power of a full-size cartridge in a short package for hunting, ranch work, or training. It is current production. A steady rest and an unhurried first group will tell you more than any description can.

It ships to your FFL dealer, never to your door. The dealer completes the background check and the transfer with you. Give the photos a slow look at full size; they show finish and wear better than any paragraph can.
