At 16.25 inches, the barrel on this M1A SOCOM 16 is short enough to carry easily and long enough to keep the rifle useful. It is a new, civilian semi-automatic in the M14 pattern, chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO with a 10-round magazine. The finish is black.
A rifle with a short barrel suits some jobs better than others. In brush, around vehicles, and in tight blinds, it is easy to swing. The trade-off is a louder report and a bit less velocity than a 22-inch rifle, and Springfield adds a muzzle device to help manage that. The weight of the rifle also keeps recoil under control.
The M1A mixes old features with a modern production line. The two-stage trigger and aperture sight are classic. Many owners add an optic, and the SOCOM stock provides a stable platform for it. If you hunt hogs or deer at moderate distances, it is a capable choice.
Take time to learn the gas system and keep it clean. Check your zero after your first couple of magazines, and make sure the mount is tight. The rifle ships to your FFL dealer, where the background check is completed.
