Hunters who walk long distances prefer a rifle that is short and quick, and the Scout Squad fits. The barrel on this M1A is 18 inches, a good deal shorter than the standard 22-inch rifle. The manufacturer says the shortened barrel is something you will appreciate on longer hikes over the mountain and through the alders.

This is a new, New York compliant version. It is chambered in .308 Winchester or 7.62 NATO and has a 10-round magazine, a black finish, a steel receiver, a synthetic stock, and a weight of about 9 pounds. The forward scope mount brings the added versatility of extended eye-relief optics, and a specially designed muzzle brake helps tame recoil.

The Scout Squad keeps the two-stage military-style trigger and the aperture rear sight, adjustable for windage and elevation. It is a ranch rifle that can ride in a truck or hang on a wall, and it carries the power of a battle rifle in a more compact form.

Because state rules vary, confirm the rifle is legal where you live. Your dealer can verify and handle the transfer. The rifle ships to your FFL dealer, where the background check is completed.
