A short barrel, a Parkerized finish and a 10+1 capacity define this Scout Squad. It is a new Springfield Armory M1A in 7.62mm NATO, a modern sporting rifle built on the military M14 pattern. The 18 inch barrel is four inches under the standard rifle, which makes it livelier in the hands.

The Scout Squad has a following with hunters who work in woods and brush. The shorter rifle clears branches and doorways more easily, and it swings quickly on a moving hog. The aperture rear sight is the military type, adjustable for windage and elevation, and it is more robust than most scope mounts in rough country.

Parkerizing is a practical, non-reflective coating. It is easy to touch up and holds oil well. Black is a good color for a rifle that will be used hard.

The 7.62 NATO chambering takes standard .308 Winchester ammunition in most cases, but check the manual for pressure notes and for any advice on loads. A semi-automatic with a short barrel is also louder than a long one, so wear good ear protection.
