A black composite stock changes the feel of the M1A. It keeps the rifle lighter in damp weather and tougher in the field than walnut. This Springfield Armory model is a semi-automatic in .308 Winchester, with a 22 inch barrel and a 10 round magazine.

Composite stocks do not warp when they get wet, and they take a beating better than wood. That makes this version a fair choice for a hunter who works in rain, snow, or mud. The M1A pattern follows the M14, with a gas system and a rotating bolt.

It will still be a heavy rifle, but it rides easily with a good sling. Zero it carefully and learn the windage knob. Newer shooters may enjoy the rifle's strong, steady sight picture.
