One of the lesser-known makers of the M1 Carbine, Quality Hardware only assembled the firearms and made the receivers, according to the seller's notes, using parts from a network of subcontractors. The marking QUALITY H.M.C. appears on the top heel of the receiver. This used carbine is in .30 Carbine, with a 17.75 inch barrel, a black and wood finish and a 30 round magazine capacity.

Collectors of M1 Carbines enjoy chasing the makers. There were ten or so prime contractors in World War II, each with its own marks and quirks, and Quality Hardware is among the more interesting. A mix of parts from different subcontractors is normal, so a rifle with varied part marks is not necessarily wrong.

It is also a pleasant carbine to shoot: light, quick and nearly recoilless. The .30 Carbine round is fine for plinking and small game.

Take time with the markings and the photos, and check the barrel and the bolt. Carbines of this age may have been rebuilt, and an arsenal rebuild is not a fault.
