Carbine length and a scope make this 1946R Mosin Nagant a surprisingly handy rifle. The seller reports excellent condition, with a synthetic stock and a Simmons 3-9X40 scope. It is chambered in 7.62x54mmR, has a 20.2 inch barrel, a five round magazine and a black finish.

The long Russian rifles are heavy and awkward in thick cover, so a shortened carbine like this one is easier to carry. It is a sporterized style that appeals to hunters who want a cheap, strong bolt rifle and a modern stock that shrugs off weather. The scope turns a battle rifle into a deer rifle at a modest price.

The 7.62x54R round hits hard and has been used worldwide on big game for more than a century. Short barrels give more muzzle blast and a bit less velocity, but at woods ranges the difference hardly matters.

Make sure the scope is mounted solidly and zero it at the range. A cheap rifle with a good zero is a pleasure to shoot.
