Kimber builds the 84M as a lightweight short-action bolt rifle, and the SVT version aims at varmint and target shooters. It is a new rifle in the current Kimber line, not a surplus gun. Confirm the chambering and barrel length on the box and the rifle itself when it arrives.

A varmint rifle asks for a heavier barrel, a clean trigger, and a stock that stays steady on a bench. The SVT designation points to a short barrel with that purpose in mind. Short barrels keep the rifle easy to carry across a field, which helps if you stalk prairie dogs or woodchucks.

Kimber has a reputation for tight tolerances and clean finish. The 84M action is built around a small, stiff receiver, and many shooters find it accurate with a range of loads. Pair it with a good scope and stable rings, and spend an afternoon finding the load your rifle likes best.

When it arrives, inspect the bedding, the barrel crown, and the trigger. Tighten the action screws to the maker's spec before you shoot. The rifle ships to your local FFL dealer, where the background check is completed.
