The Gewehr 98 was the German infantry rifle in the First World War, and the Danzig arsenal made a good number of them. This one is dated 1914, which puts it at the beginning of the conflict. It has been sporterized, with a shorter 21-inch barrel, and the seller notes it is not a matching-numbers rifle.

The seller calls the rifle overall in very good condition. There are areas where the finish is worn. Mechanical function is excellent, and the bore is described as good but needing a cleaning. The receiver carries many German Imperial proof marks, as shown in the photos.

A sporterized rifle has a different appeal than an untouched one. It will not command the price of a pure military example, but it is often more comfortable to carry and shoot, and it costs less. If you want an 8mm Mauser for deer or for a classic plinker, a shortened Gewehr 98 gives you a strong Mauser action at a fair price.
